Don't.
1. Don't ask /vp/ for competitive advice almost everyone here is a sub 1100 shitter.
2. smogon.com
Just have fun with it. When it comes to seeing truly competitive players, you'll see everyone using virtually the same mons. If you don't mind that aspect and just want to win, just watch vids on youtube.
I myself am catching/breeding competitive shiny versions of my favorite mons, and I'm sure I'll do quite well when I start playing online more. This route has you thinking for yourself while also utilizing the internet for the recommended movesets/natures/etc. Come up with something new, idk. Just enjoy it.

FIRST THINGS FIRST,
decide what metagame you want to play in.
6v6 Singles is typically Smogon as the go-to.
Doubles is the officially recognized format for Pokemon battling and is VGC, with Nugget Bridge as your main resource.
Use pokemonshowdown.com to do simulation battles if you want to test things quickly.

Read a lot of Smogon articles and find a good Youtuber to watch battles. I've been watching a channel for some months now, PokeaimMD, and I've improved a lot.
