Do a mono-type grass or ground
Ground is easier, as you can grab onix (steelix) early, and a swinub for balance. Glisgor and Garchomp are also doable in platinum before the E4, and Gastrodon or Quagsire gets you a solid water-bro (and both are adorable)

I wanna new game my Platinum so bad but I'm such a nostalgiafag. All my Pokemon were caught in 2009~2010 and every time I see it, it makes me think of a simpler time and everything that playthrough represents, on top of having a kick ass record in the Frontier. I wanna do the Giratina stuff again. And also catch Pokemon with good natures this time.

Thankfully I found my Heart Gold the other day and I had new gamed it in March of last year. Remembered I was doing a Nuzlocke. Two-Face (Girafarig) shit all over Team Rocket's Mahogany base this morning.

It's fun but it's still not Platinum.

Weavile is fantastic to use in Plat, though it's obtained pretty late game. Get it Ice Punch with shards and you're good to go.
