I started trying out a Dark mono-team for doubles a few months back and this guy turned out to be a real hero to the team as support. Real fun too.

I've even gone to the point of having several of them, each with different movesets for different plays. They're all named after the mobsters from Samurai Jack.

Vivillon is probably the most interesting story I have, most of them are just things that turned out to be useful. During an X Wedlocke, I got a Scatterbug with a Mild nature and Compound Eyes. It managed to end up paired with an Aurorus after my Fletchinder died. While the run was a bloodbath, that Vivillon and Aurorus pair survived the entire game. They outlived two Lucario, Greninja, Goodra, Poliwrath, and lots of others. Compound Eyes Sleep Powder + Hurricane and Quiver Dance is actually really fucking good.

Carbink was pretty good as well. It was at fairly low health facing down Diantha's Mega Gardevoir, and I went to heal it, but accidentally healed my Slowbro instead. I thought Carbink was done, but no, it lived the next Moonblast with 2HP.

I never knew how much of a hard hitter he was until I played White Two for the first time. Even with Fire Punch, he one hit-KOed foes for most of the time. He's like a Fire-type Slaking, but a bit more frail and without Truant. I really want to breed one now and use him as a starter in a new run.

Bugs are easy to overlook.
You see a Caterpie, Weedle, or even a Spinarak and pass it up because it doesn't have obvious advantages.
Most games throw all of their bugs in early routes at low levels, when they're basically grass types without grass moves and an added weakness to rock. They're way too easy to overlook.

Most people opt to pick up a flying type and a "special" type because they're almost guaranteed to be viable all the way through late-game.

I think one day in HG I just took one along for the ride, and it ended up lasting a really long time on my team and pulled a lot of weight, even though it was still a temp and I eventually swapped it out with something later once I had fully planned out my team.

Obvious, since most people just see Zubat as a meme, it's easy to overlook how good its evolution actually is. It's really fun in-game if you breed Zen Headbutt and Hypnosis onto it.

Was playing a randomized FireRed ROM, and found a Solrock in Mt. Moon (ironically enough). It's got a really fun moveset to play around with, and hits really hard at the beginning of the game since it's a single stage Pokemon.

>Tangrowth
Had one in White 2 and he survived almost everything that was thrown at him like a champ. Was consistently an MVP along with Braviary.

>Masquerain
Developed a much greater appreciation of it, since Surskit was my first ever shiny.

>Zigzagoon
Pickup is the cutest ability. Especially when RS were still new, there was nothing like a cute little Pokemon in your team being able to randomly find useful items for you. That and its adorable animations in Pokemon Colosseum made me love it.

Eviolite Prankster, and Honchkrow looks terrible in comparison. I don't really like Honchkrow at all, but its existence allows Murkrow to use Eviolite, so it's all good. Easily my least favourite dark type though.

This pig saved my Emerald Nuzlocke by doing nothing. Then it evolved and pulled the rest of the game. Alongside Flygon who died to some shithead who had a Slaking with Ice Beam right at the end of Victory Road.

Banette in RSE is fun to use, since you can use its great Attack stat.

Otherwise, I caught a Steelix in Cliff Cave in HGSS and it was really dependable and could wall the endgame Dragons for days. Once I stalled out Kingdra's Hydro Pumps, it could do nothing to me.

And Crobat is great, I love using the guy.

I started with Crystal when i was about 7. my Typhlosion, Togetic, and Ariados were all i used throughout the whole game. Haven't finished Moon yet because irl bullshit desu, but once i finish it, i might try to make a competitive team with the three.

Also, an irl friend and i battle with our in-game teams on occasion, before we go full meta later in the gen. The Farfetch'd you get by in-game trade in X had perfect HP IV for some reason, and i kept him through the Elite Four. His moveset was

>Brave Bird
>Night Slash w/ stick
Throw out Lopunny and Gothitelle in a double battle, and paralyze the opposing Pokémon, switch Lopunny out for Farfetch'd, Agility and Swords Dance until one of them breaks paralysis or switches, then use him to sweep. Really wish he was viable in meta, though.

In black I caught him to synchronize kyurem, the bastard was my MVP along with Stoutland, Elgyem is just amazing if you get a good HP on him, mine had ground and he just nailed everything I needed gone.
