Lugia looks amazing in it's original Sugimori artwork and in the second movie. It's cry is epic (or WAS epic, I don't particularly like what the new games have done to cries). Not that Ho-Oh isn't cool, it is - but at the end of the day, it's a giant bird (a very cool giant bird, tho) vs a sea monster who starred in his own movie. Lugia just has broader appeal. But Ho-Oh is the first Johto Pokemon we ever saw, before we even knew that there would be a second generation. That's pretty special if you ask me. I love them both.

Lugia IS stronger than ho oh. Thats one reason. Being a physic flying that learns water moves gives it an advantage one on one over ho oh. Plus fire mons were generally weaker in competitive play due to the over use of so many water mons. Sacred fire has burn rate but aeroblast crits. Plus burn isnt as effective as para or sleep. I battled friends when these games came out and lugia usually came out on top. Ofcourse we werent playing as intense as these wi fi battles. But still. Hydro pump wins at the basic level.

Ho oh has a stupid name. It literally is a Hoe.

Lugia's design is better. Looks like a cross between a fucking dragon and the loch ness monster. And those hand wings were fucking original. Nothing really stands out about ho oh. Its a cooler phoenix than moltres... but still we already HAD a phoenix nonetheless. And lugia had a movie.

I loved the gen II games. Had gold and silver. But lets not pretend like ho oh was cooler than lugia.

Big nostalgia factor, Lugia was pushed much more than Ho-oh in the anime while it was still enjoying massive popularity, so it was the face of Gen 2 for a while. It's also a sea dragon and has a pretty cool design, so there's that.

Ho-oh hasn't had nearly as much exposure in comparison, despite more interesting lore and being better competitively. It's only now getting a large role in a movie.

Lugia isn't stronger though. It has awful attacking stats for a legendary and Ho-oh, despite having an awful typing, is vastly superior in combat due to having Regenerator as an ability to go with absurd attacking power. Currently Ho-Oh is one of the best legendaries in combat, period. Lugia is just good.

Objectively wrong. Lugia has pathetic attacking stats compared to Ho-oh's great signature move and stats. Not to mention Ho-oh is significantly better competitively.

I honestly do not remember the atmosphere of gaming back then. As far as I know, Pokemon was the ONLY handheld RPG at the time. I could be mistaken. The alternative would be that handhelds do not exist, because also if Pokemon did not exist, then handhelds might not have become as popular as they are.

Almost everyone I talked too said they played Gold first and I figure that being kids, the game was probably based on the mascot poke. I mean in the same token, I played Silver first because I preferred Lugia's design.

Suicune was featured in the Celebi movie if i remember correctly, and was already popular because of its design.

Gen 2 had some of the weakest designs as far as mascots go (although the normal Pokemon were fine).
We had a phoenix, although it was an ugly one, so Ho-Oh felt rather unnecessary, and Lugia, while people claim it as "majestic," comes across more as awkward, as the wings are not structured as wings but rather flat, human-like hands, and it has a face that looks like it is trying to be both draconian and avian at the same time, but doesn't manage to be either.

I just like it cause it looks like a dragon. This is legit the only case of this for me

Ho-Oh should have been on the box art for Colosseum at least, with the protag/Wes and Rui being present with Espeon and Umbreon as it is now.
