Seems like only Charizard and Lucario are the constantly shilled pokemon after their gens ended. As said Piplup disappeared entirely after DP ended, besides Dawn's cameo, and didn't get a big role again till the female in Movie 20.

Also a lot of the other older most promoted pokemon like Togepi, Psyduck, Croagunk, maybe Munchlax, etc...also all pretty much disappeared and aren't promoted much after their gens ended.

What was the shill pokemon of Gen III? I can't think of any in particular, unless you just count Sceptile and Blaziken. Deoxys was also really popular for a while, but he's a event legendary so its to be expected.

I don't there really was one in gen 3 until Sceptile.

The starters themselves were the only promoted pokemon in Gen III. It's why Ash's Hoenn team didn't have any particularly marketable pokemon outside Sceptile, (although the writers gave Corphish a fantastic personality), and May's team only had 3 Hoenn pokemon and then Munchlax and Kanto starters. Brock only had Mudkip and Ludicolo too.

Plusle and Minun were also the least shilled Pikachu clones. Since there was two of them the writers couldn't put them on the main cast like all the other Pikachu clones.

Tomioka was the head writer of DP, he could have went full Pearlshipping if he wanted to. Instead he wasted time with Kenny and his pointless crush on Dawn, then played around with some Zoey/Dawn moments, then had Conway creep over Dawn, all the while maintaining the Ash/Dawn friendship.

Considering Tomioka wrote a large chunk of the Contestshipping moments in AG (he wrote nearly all the big Drew episodes), you could tell he wasn't adverse to shipping in general.
