Horrible forced tutorial introductions. Gen 1-4 just had very little of this, and most of it could be skipped very easily, making jumping into a new save fairly painless for players who have already played through the game. Then Gen 5 came.

In my opinion, S/M actually has some pretty decent replay value given all the options for teams you could have. I had trouble all the way to the end trying to finalize a party. The problem is, as OP said, cutscenes are the bane of this game.

I think Gen3's problem is they had just introduced abilities, so shit like Poison Point, Static, etc are there on-top of Poison Sting, Thunder- moves, etc that also cause status effects, but yes, I remember Ruby being a pain because of them.
