In the anime a Stoutland died of old age and the whole board was upset as fuck about it. They pulled every stop in the book to make sure you knew the thing had passed away, from a grim diagnosis by Nurse Joy to the thing not being there in the morning when the little kitty woke up on the couch under the bridge. The thing could also barely move and was obviously in pain.

Basically there was a Stoutland that had a close friendship with a Litten in the anime. Stoutland was very old, and it was getting progressively worse in health. The two Pokemon slept under a bridge as they had before one night (after being brought back from the hospital), and in the morning, Stoutland was gone, and the Litten woke up alone under a rainy bridge.

Ash asks where the Stoutland went, and Kukui only replies with "Don't ask."
