My theory is that the movie takes place at the end of the series timeline, when a huge universal reboot had to happen to fix all the inconsistencies.

For the anime's 20th anniversary, they decided the next movie would be a retelling of the first season and feature Ho-Oh.
Now that info about it is coming out, we've found out they've scrapped Brock, Misty, and Gary in favor of movie original characters (read: nobodies) who inexplicably have future gen Pokemon. Those Pokemon are:

>Ken Sugimori's deified fursona
>Bara Tiger, the latest attempt at starter shilling
There's also Marshadow, but he's cute and could be plot relevant so he gets a pass.

The total removal of Brock and Misty feels dirty, but the anime has always been marketing shit first and foremost. Not surprised they would "remake" it and stomp on the old stuff and pave over it with new pokemon and characters.

Not him, but ORAS and SM have pretty much confirmed alternate universes for the mainline games, undoubtedly they'll try to somehow include that in this movie, thus making all the movies canon in their own separate universe. We have three Ash's now, main anime Ash, Ash from all of the previous movies, and the Ash in this one.
