I got it now.
So M20 Ash is Game Ash. The one who gave Sun Ash-Greninja, and whose photos were in the abandoned Thrifty Walmart.
That's why his rival isn't Gary (because Blue is Red's rival already), and that's why he travels with some literally whos instead of Misty and Brock (since they've always been nothing but Gym Leaders in the games).
That's also why May, Dawn, Iris, Serena and everyone else won't appear in this movie.
