Add to the fact that within those four specials the only Pokémon he was ever shown using or owning was Charizard. I think XY kinda put them in a bad spot for league related stuff for awhile, if they make Ash win an Alola league ,if there even is one, it will just feel like them trying to make up for the worst ending of any season, and even then I doubt they could ever build up as much hype for a poor mans slapstick series.

Yeah, at this point I'm only watching because I think it's cool to see how they animate the Pokemon and the human characters from the games. The rest of it I have really low expectations for.

On the other hand, the writers pretty much did convey in as many words that they wanted Ash to win the Kalos League. They just couldn't actually go through with it for corporate reasons. So, officially, he lost, but in the writers' minds he really should have won, which is good enough for me.
