>design cartridges with special tabbed batteries
>solder batteries in
>secure cartridges with proprietary "Y" shaped screws

What exactly was their end goal?
>>
just remember that times existed when (most) people stoped caring about old video games when the new stuff comes out - that's why

...otherwise you could ship your cart to nintendo if the battery runs dry
>>
>>32227106
there were lots of pirated carts in asia my man
>>

So, what exactly did the battery do? I mean, the game is still playable, so why put a battery in it?
>>
>>32227299
anti-piracy measure, bootleg copies would have their save file gone (i know it too well)
>>
>>32227314
Brain fart, sorry. Hands typed everything up top wrong. It doesn't do anything with the save file.
>>
People aren't intended to be able to get in there. It's possible to replace the batteries last I checked anyways.
>>

they obviously put some thought into keeping people out of the cartridge. so you'd think they expected that one day the batteries would all die and the owners would try to open the cartridge to replace them. By that point they would be way out of warranty. The only logical reason to want to prevent people from opening the cartridges is that Nintendo is pure evil and hates its customers.

It's easier to get into than GBC carts because it uses the same proprietary screws as damn near every Nintendo handheld prior to the 3DS rather than its own.

If anything, I think they just don't expect or care if people can play the games past when they can stand to make money on it. By the time the battery runs out in any of the Pokemon games, they're long out of print.
