Dawn's personality didn't change drastically, but I don't think it really needed to. She just got humbled when she lost contests at the beginning and learned to cope with it.

Serena's development was good but pacing of her character episodes was utter shit.
7th ep was her "introduction" and set up whole "looking for goal" thing.
But then she barely did anything until EP40. Sure, she had Pokevision/Poffle Contest but that felt like filler activities, she never even considered them as possible " goals".

Then rapid development happens in EP40-EP64, Serena evolves as character multiple times.

Then she again does literally nothing, standing in background until 80th ep, second Tripokalon. And after she catches Eevee they rush her arc and then she does nothing again until XYZ45.

Dawn was the perfect mix of action girl/girly girl. That's exactly why a lot of people complain Serena didn't do much or didn't battle. While you're right that Dawn's personality didn't change much, they had her become more self confident and less vain/stubborn after she had her depression streak from early DP.

The only reason she might have gotten a bit bland in late DP was because the saga itself was dragging at that point and Brock's dead personality didn't give Dawn anyone good to play off of.

Misty was only headstrong in the beginning and then she got Togepi and became a dull motherly character for most of her run. May had a lot of headstrong and action moments, but the writers still kept her secondary to Ash in most of AG. I actually wish May got to save the day as much as Dawn did in DP, but the writers still had Ash do almost everything in AG.

It's just luck of the draw, Dawn was written as a full co-star. May's screentime divide with Ash was more like 60/40, rather than Ash/Dawn's 50/50.

Rewatch what, May or Dawn's episodes? I know what they did in each series.The writers let Dawn battle Elite 4 Lucian, Maylene, had her in DP's tag battle tournament, had her participate in the Team Galactic finale, etc.

The writers didn't do this stuff with May, unfortunately. Would have loved to see May battle a Gym leader (like her father, Norman), or have a role in the villain team finale, but they didn't do this with her. The writers were still under the mentality Ash had to do everything in AG
