Play either SS if you want the newer graphics and not complete garbage learn sets or crystal if want the nice retro style and cozier ost. Johto is admitably the most unbalanced gen and offers the worst selection of pokemon of any mainline game. Its good but I think maybe look into a hack that fixes these problems.
