There was also the Celebi event in Crystal, which like the Mew event in Emerald, only got an official distribution in Japan. Japan had the Mobile Adapter GB, which could connect a Gameboy to a cell phone and use the phone's cellular internet for online play. You could say the same about the starters that can't be caught from friend safari, island scan, etc. While they are given to the player and they have your as the OT you technically didn't catch them.
