Also I always felt that there might come a time where trimming the dex would have to happen, somewhere down the line. I don't want it to, per se, but the bigger it gets the harder and harder a game will be to develop. In two or three generations we'll likely have +1,000 Pokemon. Can you think of any other game with that many of something in it?

Absolutely no, please.
Even though I hate some designs (and some meta cancers), what is done is done.

First because there is no point. If you don't like it, don't use it.
("But I hate playing against X" doesn't count, because if X is actually viable, it most likely wouldn't appear on those polls)

Second because "having too many Pokés" isn't going to be solved that way, only postponed. Also, Regional Dex balances that, and so do Regional variants.

Third because more variety is always better. It makes the world feel better. There isn't an ecosystem made out of a rat and a bird anymore, but mix of birds, mammals, insects, rocks, trees, dragons, keychains (??), and so on.

Last, because shit taste (plus trolls) might end up erasing actual good designs.

Not really. All the previous Pokemon still existed in the code and had sprites and data and everything. If you were to use a game shark or something you could force them to appear. For me, I'd remove Kangaskhan. If it had some kind of pre-evolution, it'd make sense, but it's just... born with a baby in its pouch. I will never get over that.

Would it be that much of a big deal? Every other game with monsters does it. SMT, DQ, yugioh, digimon, and pretty much every japanese rpg series. They are always creating and discarding monsters with each new game, but the popular ones always come back.

It's also the same for every series with hundreds of characters as well, like shonen shit or fighting games.

I mean, they do it, but it's not necessarily a good thing. There are a lot of reasons why Pokemon completely dwarfs its competition and I'm pretty sure being able to get your favorites in every game is one of them.
