Why did they start basing fossil Pokemon on dinosaurs instead of more obscure species like in Gens 1 and 3?

Lots of regular Pokemon (Aggron, Tyranitar, Meganium, etc.) resemble dinosaurs already, so having fossil Pokemon be dinosaurs too seems redundant.

There was already a lot of theropod Pokemon, Tyrantrum could have been a normal Pokemon rather than a fossil. Great Pokemon overall (who doesn't love T-Rex) but one of the worst fossil Pokemon possible.
