Often gimmicky, but their ability to nuke something as long as it's not immune to it is useful in some situations and mons. Particularly useful is that it ignores accuracy checks, so something could run, say, Z-Focus Blast and use said Z-Move to OHKO 100% of the time a particular check, or something. I think Heatran used Bloom Doom like this for a while.

Z-Status moves are also fairly useful. Z-Mist on Fini gives it a one-off heal, which is very helpful.

This is something I wondered about when then games came out I guess it gives already good Pokémon an even better shot at OHKOing whatever they get in front of them.

single target nuke earthquake is amazing
I often see teams with 2 Z move users, It's just too good because of it gives you much more options
not gamebreaking like megas but still makes the game faster and more interesting IMO
dunno about singles, I saw some rock / fly Z Landorus but that's all, since the game are longer, having a move that works only once compared to life orb boosts/choice item boosts isn't worth it

In all seriousness, people are still discovering uses for it.

One of the first discoveries was Z-Conversion Porygon-Z. That thing is great now.
Moxie Pokémon, like Salamence, Gyarados and Krookodile also like them. Z-Fly for Salamence and Z-Bounce for Gyarados.
Speaking of Z-Fly, Landorus-T got a lot more threatening. Z-Fly destroys bulky grass types (like Tangrowth and Venusaur) who walled Landorus before. Z-Stone Edge destroys flying types that walled it before. Hence, Flying types and Grass types are no longer safe switch-in's for a set-up Landorus.
Z-Solarbeam does similar things for some grass types. Heatran and Volcanion like having it.
Recently, Gengar (who is now UU) is seeing a resurgence in OU due to its Z-Shadow Ball, which very few Pokémon resist and can then 2HKO most bulky walls (bar Chansey).

But the claim in the prerelease days that Z-Moves would make shitmon competitively relevant never happened. As I said, it just make already great Pokémon better.

I don't know about smogon but I find them insanely cancerous in the official metas. It's like they decided to bring back pre-nerf Explosion except your Pokemon doesn't die for using it and literally everyone learns it. Oh and it also comes with its own stupid long ass flashy animation which drags on forever.
