I don't like literal stones most of the time, ground type has a lot more variability, it can go from simple animals to dragons and combinations of them.

Rock-types tend to either be literal rocks or have rocks heavily involved with the design. While there's a few ground-types covered in mud/earth they aren't necessarily limited in this way.

Along with what others have said, ground is also a much more reliable type than rock. You cant really go wrong with a ground type in your party

Think of Ground as "Earth" type and Rock as "mineral" type.

The idea of Ground type seems to be creatures with some greater connection to the earth itself. Usually they are diggers or burrowers, but don't necessarily have to be.

Rock types seem to be related to physical stone as part of their anatomy.
