They were doomed to be unpopular from square one, with grenigger being in smash before the games were out, fueling hype and interest. The only chance they stood was some small amount of usability within the game and they didn't even get that.

To say that Delphox and Chesnaught are nobodies favorites is just plain untrue. With how many people there are in the world in every city, country, and continent, you seriously think Delphox and Chesnaught CAN'T be somebody's favorite?

Exactly. Honestly, I think they sabotaged Delphox and Chesnaught on purpose just to give people more reason to choose the frog over the other two, almost as if all the development time went into Greninjas abilities, movepool and stats and only threw in Chesnaught and Delphox in as an afterthought as if to say "oh shit, we still need a fire and grass type starter for this generation!"

If you look at Greninja from a purely competitive perspective, you'll see some obvious bias on GFs part, proving my point of "Give everything to the frog, leave nothing for the others":

Greninja has the most vast and varied movepool of the three by a very wide margin when thematically it should really be Delphox who has the widest movepool being a mage and all. You know, a mage. A magic user. A controller of the elements. So naturally you'd expect it to get some traditional mage class moves like thunderbolt, energy ball, power gem, maybe even surf, all on top of its standard fire and psychic moves. Yet Delphox has an almost barren movepool to speak of when Greninja gets almost every move under the sun.

Abilites-This is the most glaring one of them all. While Delphox's ability is straight up useless and Chesnaught's while good is also extremely situational, Greninja's is almost broken when you combine its unreasonably vast movepool with its high speed, letting it not only have an offensive advantage by making every move STAB, but defensively too since protean can also remove its typical weaknesses it would have otherwise.

Stats-In terms of stat spread all three of their stats all make perfect sense in both theme and execution being based on the big 3 traditional RPG classes (cont)

Even their designs look phoned in. Look how Delphox lost the cool matchstick wand and replaced it with nothing. Just a tall Braixen with more shit on it, they didn't even care if it looked good. Even forgot to give it the flame pattern on its tail.

Chesnaught had a little more thought put in it, but the design is still lazy. Just horizontal lines and weird stiff arms, spikes overlap the patterns so they look slapped on, etc.

Knight, mage and rouge. And their stats perfectly reflect that. Heavy hitting defensive powerhouse, physically frail magic user, and completely frail yet extremely fast and powerful rouge. However, it appears GF wanted to make the rouge all of these given the combination of its speed and ability.

Popularity: Well this ones obvious. The fact that Greninja got into smash before its own game got released and the fact it got a superpower special snowflake form in gen 7 along with a frankly ludicrous stat buff that makes it statistically stronger than an official mega evolution without even having to hold a stone AND having its signature move retconned so that it uses its better attacking stat while Chesnaught and Delphox got literally nothing proves to me that game freak had almost NO intention of giving Chesnaught fans and Delphox fans something good while they focused solely on their shillfrog which is only popular because of its sheer overabundancy that THEY created. Its a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way like that.

how and why would they adjust mystical fire and spiky shield? they're already optimized for their users. also, chesnaught's movepool is fucking massive if you didn't notice, way broader than greninja's. it's just delphox who got screwed on that front.
