Why did gamefreak give a hindering ability to a mon that

Meanwhile 530 BST is around the typical amount starters get, and Gyarados/Milotic have 540 BST.

It's not really a "hindering ability", since it doesn't actively hinder Golisopod.

Truant makes it so Slaking can only move every other turn.

Slow Start halves Regigigas's Attack and Speed for the first five turns.

Defeatist halves Archeops's Attack and Special Attack when it reaches half health.

Emergency Exit just causes Golisopod to automatically switch out when it reaches half health.

Yeah, it could have something better, but it ties into its concept/flavor without "hindering" it the way the above three do.

It's not a 100% hindering ability like Truant, Slow Start, and Defeatist. GF just misjudged how much the shitty aspect outweighs the strategic aspect of it.

It helps you get more first impressions in, it's there to help you and you're a dumbfuck if you dont realize it

archeops and slaking have abilities that are multiple times worse than golisopod, archeops becomes fucking useless after a good hit and slaking is easy as shit to set up on even for a sub 1100 elo retard while golisopod can still be used as a decent muhmentum attacker with STAB priority in an emergency

i'd argue that they probably reduced golisopod's original base stats in development when they realized that it's ability really isn't that bad.

It's a shit ability that hinders it greatly. Golisopod would like to attack with its massive 125 base attack, but it can't because it's forced to switch once it takes even a remotely strong special attack. Then it comes back in and dies without doing anything. This thing is hands down one of the worst fully evolved Pokemon in the game and its ability is a big part of it.

and its low speed isn't a huge deal when it has usable priority moves, amazing bulk and decent defensive type. sure psychic terrain fucks its priority, but that's one ability on one pokemon.

Nigger, Golosipod's got a good typing (bug/water), a 140 defense, and a 90 special defense. He also learns Sucker Punch, which is a dependable priority move that counteracts his low speed for big damage, has access to Aqua Jet through breeding, or if he's coming back in and you're gonna swap at the end of next turn: Giga fucking Impact for a 150 damage no - recovery time hit with a free switch out.
