I recently purchased an original DS, and wanted to ask you guys

For Gen 4 get Platinum, it's an improved version of Pearl/Diamond and you can get both legendaries. Gen 5 isn't bad, especially if it's your first time playing it, though personally I didn't like the graphics in B/W because they're very pixel-y. I never played B/W 2 so I can't speak to those.

No Pokemon game is going to be difficult. Avoid Diamond, Pearl, Ruby and Sapphire. Platinum and Emerald are better than them in every way. Heartgold and Soulsilver are good, but expensive even without the Pokewalker. Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 are good IMO but people are pretty split on them.

I find the gen 2 remakes much entertaining. Especially with the ability to interact with your pokemon feels like you are in the game, not moving a sprite. Plus, Gen 2 has a great story and references a lot to kanto.

Get a flashcart if you're going to play any DS games, it's much, much cheaper than trying to grab the games used.

The Frontier in Emerald is the best postgame in the series, but to get the most out of it you'd want a way to get Pokémon from other games like FRLG for more variety in your teams. HGSS are also pretty big regarding single player content.

to add to this, BW2 are direct sequels to Black and White, but you don't really need to play BW to appreciate them. They're all good games but BW2 definitely have more content.
