Nothing 'happened', it's normal for an RPG with a lot of potential team members to have some that are better than others.

Gen I had 151 Pokémon but only like 15 were worth using.

Anyways the issue is that just because a Pokémon isn't OU doesn't mean you can't use it. Sub-OU Pokémon might do well in OU if they can fill a certain niche. For instance, look at that VGC champion who had a Pachirisu on his team - Pachirisu is a shitmon in almost every way, but it could fill a very specific and very useful niche.

Also, it's logical that at least a third of Pokémon are useless because there's so many pre-evolutions and early route shitmons.

They already did, kinda. Sun and Moon only give you Alola's 300 and that's it. Catch all those and the game considers it 100% completion. Gamefreak knew 800+ was too many for anyone to catch so they actually did something about it. I'm actually hoping they're warming us up for a reboot where unavailable Pokemon aren't even in the game's data (which will give them more room for better stuff)

I never try to catch them all. Just finish the story and thats it

Also, one of the main complaints about gen 3 nostalgiafags (aka the people who gf wants) is the inhability to transfer previous mons, and they just implemented poke bank to solve that issue for good in the coming gens, so they arent taking that down. What they did in sun and moon is a close as they're gonna get to a reboot for the foreseeable future.

Part of the appeal of the franchise is having access to all these different mons. While yes, it's harder to get into the series later, it's not like it's a detriment to have variety. Remember, all the models from gen 7 besides the new ones were ripped right from gen 6, and it looks like they will be for the foreseeable future. And it's not like they were even hitting the max cart size of the 3ds.

That's why the've been only introducing like 70 pokemon every gen which are mostly pretty unique from a design, or gameplay standpoint, as opposed to creating a bunch of pokemon that are the same but swap the def and sp def. or 3 elemental monkeys, or a fucking deer that has a tumor on its ass.

I like how they did it where now you only have to complete Sun's dex for the shiny charm, and they integrated a national dex into pokebank so completionists can still have that forever completed instead of constantly transferring pokemon into every game
