Decidueye's not NU, so it doesn't work well in that regard. But the idea behind the insult is fun.

I think Tepig's got the best one: his trainer lied to him and abandoned him by tying him to a post. Tepig nearly starved to death until Ash rescued him. And even after all that, Tepig still blindly trusted his old trainer and wanted to be his friend, because he only blamed himself for not being strong.

I disagree. Pokemon rarely tackles death, and almost never to the degree that this scenario would. It's cliche, yeah, but it's something Pokemon hasn't done, and it could really be a strong story.

Tepig's story was just Charmander lite. The trainer also lied to Charmander, but it felt extra bad because Charmander was actually waiting for him, almost dying in process. We don't know if he's actually been abandoned at first, and when I saw that asshole of a trainer and how rotten he is, I actually got angry. Seeing the characters show emotions toward the situation other than simple pity was also a plus. Brock getting angry is a thing I still remember, 9 years since I watched the episode.

Not to say Tepig's backstory was nothing. Being tied to a pole as your trainer just leaves and being unable to eat after that was pretty sad, but it didn't have nearly as much impact as Charmander's. Even the episode was mostly light hearted fun, with the party trying to catch a Pokemon. The very tone was different in both of these.
