Why was the following feature so damn good? It added more than I can even explain. I've failed to get into any other poke game since HG/SS because of this feature being gone. Why did game freak do this to us?
>>
>he actually fell for the following pokemon meme
>>
It added nothing of practical use except the sprites could be used for Pokethlon.

I don't mind if it sees a return, but it better be optional.
>>
>>31988630
Totally agree OP, it added so much personality to the adventure
>>
>they have 3D models they can just reuse as much as they want
>too lazy to just shrink some of them and make walking/running animations
>>
>>31988630
Cool for you. The amount of time they put into making those sprites could've been put into something productive, something that wouldn't be unusable in the very next game.

I'm glad they jumped to 3D. At the very least, there's little to no chance of GF wasting time on Pokemon following bullshit.

As a side note, Amie/Refresh >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Following Pokemon
>>
>>31988668
>just make walking/running animations
>as if they can just snap their fingers and bring them into existence

There are unused walking/running animations as of SM, though.

Actually just started up SS yesterday, really like this feature. Sure its simple but it's cool to walk and see sights with your pokemon and has a kind of bonding feel to it.
>>
>>31988630
It's just comfy. It's cool the idea of an adventure between you and your pokemon.
Exploring areas without trainers with your pokemon feels great.
>>
>>31988630
>Why was the following feature so damn good?
It's very endearing, helps with immersion and bonding much more than Refresh does.

It's much nicer to have all that small but contextual flavor text than to watch them respond to petting and feeding with the same one animation over and over. Refresh feels like putting money in an animatronic and watching it do a thing.
>>
>>31988769
>much more than Refresh does
How so? What does it do that's so better than Refresh? Don't get me wrong, I like it, but claiming a Pokemon just following you is better than playing with that Pokemon just sounds ridiculous.
>>
>>31988769
The thing is the flavor text is the same for 95% of Pokemon and like 70% of areas.

It's not bad in premise, like Amie/Refresh, but needs way better execution.
>>
>>31988801
>What does it do that's so better than Refresh?
It changes.

Like I said, Refresh feels like interacting with an animatronic, because it's always the same. Pet or feed the Pokémon and it plays a single, short animation.

Following Pokémon flavor text changes depending on where you are and what you do. Fire Pokémon get sad if you bring them to the edge of a body of water, whereas Water Pokémon get happy. They respond to the environment by doing things like peeking on two NPC trainers who are trading, greeting other Pokémon present in the overworld, swaying back and forth while on the SS Aqua or becoming alert in dangerous locations like Cerulean Cave.

It probably does more for people with a lot of imagination. You'd have to picture what the text says in your head.
>>
>>31988739
if they can make 2D sprites they can make 3D animations, this isn't a 10 men indie team for fucks sake
>>
Is this the cringe thread?
>>
>>31988647
Why optional? Does seeing it really bother you?
>>

did you name your cat "cat"?
>>
>>31988923
Yes.
>>
>>31988935
then this is a cringe thread, and you are the cringe
>>
>>31988873
I guess it's not something I would understand. To me, the very idea that each Pokemon interacting with you in it's own unique way, and you seeing and having an active part in that interacting is somehow more animatronic than just a sized down sprite following you, some text telling you what happened, and that "happening" being the same for most Pokemon is just completely ridiculous.
>>
>>31988942
Okay.

But Black and White still had all the overworld pokemon sprites, they just weren't used. And you're acting like those sprite were fluid ultra hd sprites and not one low quality, off scale, off model, tiny sprite with 2 frames of animation only just endlessly bobbing up and down even while standing still.

you are entirely right about refresh/amie being better

>>
>>31988630
It added to the atmosphere and also made your team feel more personal, they also made the world far less empty.

>>31988722
Refresh is good but in different ways, why must there be one or the other? And I'd certainly take followers + a more detailed refresh expansion with more minigames over the next boring as shit reskinned battle tower with a somewhat different gimmick they'd give us otherwise.

>>31988954
In a way you're both right, Refresh certainly varies a lot from species to species and is more interactive, but I do agree with him that after a while you're just getting the same animations and not as much real interaction, followers may have said the same thing 70% of the time but it still felt much more personal and influenced by my own journey.

Shit's all good, I want both of them and they'd be great together.
>>
>>31988630
Can't say I miss it.
Wasn't really a feature I thought about much, could take it or leave it.
>>
>>31988880
No, he means they already have walking/running animations. They were found in the code a while back. Every single Pokemon has them and the only explanation anyone can come up with for them is that SM was going to have a following feature at some point.
>>
>Baaaaaw I don't like having more features help me daddy gamefreak please remove more of them next game!
Only in /vp/ this is defended and encouraged

What the hell is wrong with Pokemon fans? Why are they such drones?
>>
>>31989525
>I don't like a feature and would like it to be optional
>this means I don't want it to be in at all

lmao
>>
>>31989525
They think that there can only be one new feature per game and simply attaching the existing animations to all the Pokemon is going to rob them of something they like or something.

That or closeted furfags so afraid of being outed they'll scream at anything that has to do with interacting with Pokemon outside of battling or things relating in some way to battling.
>>
>>31989563
Those guys are fine though, that's how it should be especially for some retardedly big ones.
>>
So, uh... what's up with all those walking and running animations for literally every single Pokemon, form, and mega evolution found in Sun and Moon?

Surely those mean something, right? Even if they aren't gonna be used, it means that they at least actually considered it, right?

And if they ARE gonna be used, then when?
>>
>>31989581
Who knows. It would be pretty cool if they did it in Gen 8 though.
>>
>>31989581
There's lots of things it could be used for, I wouldn't expect anything involving the overworld in Gen VII unless they pull a Crystal and go New 3DS only which is very unlikely since the N3DS hasn't done as well as the GBC did for a hardware half-step, but in Gen VIII for Switch or a proper 3DS successor there's very little reason not to include following.

Meh, it wasn't anything special to me and I don't really miss it, kind of annoying actually since I dislike following party members in other RPGs as well. Like others have said, refresh did more for me without feeling as intrusive and irritating.
I do want to see the run animations used in some way though.

>>

Thing is, those sprites were designed for the entralink so everything involving them in HGSS was literally just tacked on.
>>
>>31989159
>they just weren't used.
Except they were and for their original purpose.
>>
>>31992139
There's fun and then there's a feature that is literally just there to add more points to the back of the box. Not to mention they dumbed the pokemon down hard and didn't take nature nor personality into much account so it was horrible for autists who wanted to imagine their pokemon the way it was written.
>>

>>
>>31991893
Are there any pictures of Kyogre following the player? I couldn't find any.

Oh yeah, knowing that every pokemon in my team is thinking EXACTLY the same thing, and acting EXACTLY the same way does wonders for my immersion. HGSS was incredibly feature-packed and blew any modern gen out of the water on content. GF isn't 5 people in their mom's garage, multiple teams can work on a project at once.

Whether or not it was their original motivation for making them, it's pretty obvious they had intentions to use these animations for something beyond the shitty Pokefinder.

That's some real basic bitch fanboy-tier logic there, that coupled with how defensive you're getting over the idea of adding in a cute gimmick that at this rate would take less than a week for a small team to implement is really making me doubtful of your authority to judge who is and isn't "sounding smart".
