you can enter the code basically as soon as you have a save file, so within seconds of you starting the game, save, reset enter code

to actually collect the pokemon in game you usually need to get to the first pokemon center

in x/y it takes about 15mins, in OR/AS it takes a while longer and in Sun/Moon it takes about a week to get through the cutscenes
