So when you approach this area you get the little cutscene where Maxie takes the orb then announces he's going to Slateport before leaving. Then you have to battle Courtney. If you lose here you have to come back and watch the same scene again before getting another chance to fight.
This of course makes no sense. I understand they want you to fight this miniboss before proceeding, but surely there's a better way to force a fight without breaking the narrative? It can't even be justified as the situation resetting and the first fight never occured, because you keep any exp. you gain and lose some money.
This is not the only case of this in these games, for example Gym Leaders always using their "welcome, new challenger" speech no matter how many times you refight them. In those instances they could at least write another line of dialogue acknowledging you're back for more.
How do other RPGs handle this? The only ones I can think of just have it so party wipe = game over.
>party wipe = game over
This is Pokemon, GF wouldn't do this. Even if you lose to Cyrus in the Distortion World you still get another chance to fight him
Now that I think about it, how do XY handle the possibility that, after the cutscene after you capture Xerneas/Yveltal, you lose to Lysandre? Do you have to capture the legendary again to trigger the cutscene?

Yeah I know, I'm not saying that's the proper way to do it, that's just the only way I've seen it done in other RPGs (which I don't play very much of, admittedly)

Oh yeah. What about losing against Ghetsis or N after catching Reshiram/Zekrom?
