Having the same problem OP. I've used all the easily available mons time and time again so I play the first 20 mins and realise while playing I don't know who to put in my team

Did you know you can skip the entirety of Silph Co. to get the scope, by simply using a Pokedoll to get out of the ghost Marowak fight in the Tower? The game will let you pass through.

Actually, I can't check for ya for after the E4 cause I stopped after gym 7 (was doing 8F execution stuff). But the Rocket grunt is still standing in front of the poster and can be challenged.

So the whole event can be done even though there is no longer any point to it after defeating the grunts in the Pokemon Tower via the Pokedoll glitch.

Pretty much. The only real fun the games offer is all the glitch abuse that can be done. That's how I got a bunch of shiny Kanto mons and my Mew up to SM.

It's a lot better with rom hacks that have the run button.
