VGC happened. Gamefreak is so obsessed with VGC that it affects both the single player and other multiplayer metas.

Terrain abilities probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the existence of VGC and needing your meta to be fresh.

I'm also sure that it was the reason why ORAS got so many doubles exclusive Mega (Intended doubles exclusives at least) and why we don't have the battle frontier.

Which is perfectly reasonable, because single battles are inherently degenerate and impossible to balance by nature.

VGC is possibly the least strategic meta outside of Smogon's Other Metas (which are designed to be fun).
Anything that isn't the copy pasta team with some variation won't be top 8, and anything not Hyper Offensive won't win you any games in that format at all.

But that's besides the point. Gamefreak is completely ignoring its biggest audience of competitive and non-competitive players solely to appease one small group. And it's not like it's that hard to not try appealing to all groups.
