Fighting type was in a complicated situation that fairy didn't really solve
Offensively they were good against 5 types, three of which were key coverage points: Normal, Steel, and Dark.
This is compensated for by the fact that it's resisted by four types and does no damage against another. Of these offensive disadvantages, Psychic, Flying, and Ghost were pretty commonly used.
Defensively, fighters had two weaknesses and three resistances. Psychic and Flying are very common offensive types and the only key resistance fighting had was dark.
Based on all of this, they're actually pretty balanced offensively and actually pretty crap defensively.
However fighting was still seen very often, and they were generally better than a lot of their competition. I blame this on their movepools
Most fighting moves have poor distribution, the only usable fighting moves with good distribution to non-fighters I can think of are brick break and focus miss.
A lot of fighting 'mons have good coverage in their movepools such as elemental punches and kicks.

tl;dr: I think fighting types needed a nerf, but not by adding another weakness. Hell they'd probably be just fine if Fairy simply resisted fighting

And as you said, fighting types nealry always have great coverage: they always get Rock moves, a Tom of then get Poison Jab, Steel moves, elemental punches or Knock Off to deal with their weaknesses. Most other types don't have this luxury.

Thank God they have drawbacks. Superpower and Hammer Arm may be balances but CC and HJK remain one of the best moves in the game, you don't care about your defenses if you're a frail sweeper or just OHKOd your opponent. 90% is perfectly fair considering HJK has 130 fucking BP.
Try to compare that to the best stabs of other types (excluding legendary exclusives). Stone Edge misses all the fucking time, leaf Stromness lowers your attack by 2 stages, Solar Beam is useless outside the sun, Iron Tail has pathetic accuracy and Iron Head is too weak, Phantom Force is a joke, Shadow Claw too, Shadow Ball only 80 BP, Knock Off has 97.5 or 65 BP, Hydro Pump misses, Thunder too, Blizzard is shit and Icicle crash is not that powerful and misses a lot too, Play Rough is only 90 BP and can miss, Psychic is only 90 BP, Zen Headbutt is weak and not even perfect accuracy, Gunk Shot misses, Brave Bird and Flare Blitz kill you.
The only types that can compare are Ground, Fire and Normal. And even then fighting moves are more powerful. Especially CC and HJK.

The main thing is that two of fighting's NVE hits would be SE on fighting-types - psychic and flying, both very common and dangerous in gen 5.

Couple that with an immunity and you see that you can't just fire off Close Combats freely.
