It'll stay on the 3DS until the Switch is a confirmed success. It'll be on one or the other, and they won't risk abandoning the relatively successful 3DS unless they know it's gonna pay off. Sun and Moon were very successful. They know they have a solid playerbase on the 3DS, something that it still very much in the air for the Switch and will be for some time.

This is me being optimistic but I'd like to see Gen 4 remakes on 3DS followed by either a Gen 7 continuation or Gen 8 on the Switch.

Either DP remakes on 3DS this year with a break the year after, or a break this year with SM sequels on 3DS next year, either way followed by Gen 8 on Switch in 2019. Other possibilities are the DP remake scenario gets a Prism in 2018, but that's unlikely, or instead of one of those scenarios we get RGB remakes/sequels.

DP (2006) and XY (2013) both took two years to hit DS (2004) and 3DS (2011), SM2 would be too soon for this year both for the market and to make a quality game that differentiated itself enough from SM like BW2 did from BW1, and neither HGSS or ORAS were made due to any necessity viewed by Game Freak, but due to demand, which is there for DP remakes from the kids who grew up with them.

Of course though, anything's possible.
