I saw a theory of tvtropes that it was because psychic types could mess with their bodies in order for themselves to be hurt by their own poison. Though by that logic it should be SE against fire types as well. I don't really get why ground is supposed to be SE though?

In reality poison was probably not really thought about in terms of weaknesses and what it beats. Really should be SE against water. Balanced and gives water a third weakness like most other types.

Fine, fair enough point. Water is just very good defensively and poison as a weakness both makes logical sense and buffs poison. Even with fairies poison still is pretty relevant. More people just run a coverage move then using an actual poison pokemon.

I've always really liked the way I think about the relationship.

Basically, a psychic power can potentially do one of two things to a poison. Pokemon that are poison type have a natural venom or a collection of artificial components that contain the same chemical. One way or the other, the psychic powers are able to ignite that chemical violently.

So whenever I get an SE hit on a Poison type with a psychic move I see it exploding.

It's still a really good, type and would remain a really good type even after a reasonable nerf. My point was that waterfags are a lot more protective of their type than fans of other good types. I have literally seen someone reply with "Autism." to the suggestion that ice should resist water.
