Also, the cannon thing? It's the "ootsutsu" Pokemon. Ootsutsu means cannon, with oo again meaning big and tsutsu meaning gun. So "big gun" = "cannon", right?
However, the Japanese name for the woodpecker is kitsutsuki, which is where Pikipek's nip name "Tsutsukera" partially comes from.

So the kiTSUTSUki (gun) Pokemon evolves into an ooTSUTSU (big gun = cannon), which is a toucan because toucans are literally called oohashi = big bills in nip.

So gun (small bill) evolves into cannon (big bill/toucan).

And that's why they had to force the word "cannon" or something similar into its non-Japanese names in order to make this connection make some sort of sense. It was originally just a bunch of Japanese wordplay
