Removing HMs is probably the best thing Game Freak could have done

There are people who though HMs made the games "hardcore" added "difficulty" that "tested" your "skills"

it's because gen 4 had HMs, and the new gen has ride pokemon. that's it.

if gen 4 was the one with ride pokemon, and gen 7 had HMs, the same people would be conplaining about how much better ride pokemon are.

Hms were very useful in battle for beginning trainers but could not easily be removed, ride Pokemon are decent but I really wish they kept soar for the flyer.

They should've had two seperate flys, one for people who want to cruise around in the sky wasting time and one to get you to B as soon as possible.
