Magnezone and Tangrowth weren't failed attempt to ruin classic design, they were improvements:

Magnezone sacrificed 10 points of Speed for more bulk and Sp. Attack, meaning that anything that Magneton's HP Fire couldn't OHKO now it can, it also gave new life to Magneton by making it to be one of the best Eviolite users, it being slighty faster than Magnezone also gives it a niche.

Tangrowth is a bulkier Tangela while having both attacking stats usable. Unlike Magneton, Tangela is shit even with Eviolite. Regenerator gives Tangrowth an unique niche in being the only Grass-type that has Regenerator (excluding Tangela obviously).

the rest look like ass, but magnezone is passable by virtue of having a cool shiny and being actually decent in battle. Rhyperior has a small niche but it looks far too much like garbage to forgive

Kingdra, Blissey, Politoed, Bellossom, Roserade, Weavile, Alomomola, both Porygons, Electrivire, and Mamoswine are great.

I like Magnezone, hell, I used it on my team numerous times, but Magneton has a quirky kind of charm to it that makes me like it more than its evolution. It's a lot more likeable than Dugtrio imho.

Rhyperior and Magmortar are awful. At least Magmortar had the decency not to ruin an already good design.

Tangrowth isn't bad, but I feel like it could've been better had they not skimped on the vines. Spaghetti monster in boots > Grassy hill with nipple tentacles

Lickilcky is garbage, but it's not like Lickitung was any better.

A case can be made for the changes to all of them; in fact for Tangela and Lickitung they only change juuust enough to work.
Rhyperior however goes in the opposite direction. It's not a bad design at all, rather it introduces a wildly different concept and aesthetic, akin to a Mega evolution. Rhyperior is also a shitty name, so if it were me, I'd have made it Rhydon's Mega, especially since Rhydon already has the stats of a fully evolved Pokemon.

I'd like to see more cross-gen evos but the backlash for these guys will probably guarantee there won't be any.

Objectively, only Lickilicky is a complete disasters. I got used to Rhyperior, Magmortar and Electvire. Tangrowth is meh, but is also Tangela.
