Gen 6 felt like a stepping stone and i imagine it was because they were putting all their eggs in gen 7. Mabye nintendo's failure with the wii u and decision to make the NX portable too has put GF in a position to have to hurry to put out gen 8.

seems as if too much rush is causing all the problems but if you speak in popularity i think it's at its second high (definitely lower than pokemania but not gen 4/5 levels of noninterest)

I avoided almost all spoilers and news about Sun and Moon so I could have a blind run experience like I did with gens 2-4. I just completed the third island's waste management company Muk/Grimer fights so I haven't gotten too far into the story, but I can see gamefreak definitely left their comfort zone. Gen 7 is nowhere near the gamecube games' level of ambition (double battles as standard, steal other trainers' pokemon, purify darkness, etc) but they made small advances that have been popular in rpgs yet missing from pokemon until now such as the mini map, reskins of monsters with different stats, and the removal of HMs in favor of specific pokemon helping naturally. This isn't to say the execution was good, but they at least tried. They could have scrapped ride pokemon altogether and had it where if you had a pokemon with the innate ability to do something that replaced a HM it would be a passive ability, like all water types can ferry you around or all capable flying/levitating pokemon could fly you around.

Tl;dr- gf tried new things this gen but their execution sucked

It is literally incomplete. There are areas that get referenced or are even visible, but are never accessible. Beyond that there are a number of areas that have such little content that it could be questioned why they're even in the game, such as Hano Grand Resort and Blush Mountain.
You can say it feels complete to you, but the near-undeniable fact is that this game was rushed out at some point in development to meet a holiday release, which it got.

Yeah but in terms of gameplay we actually fell behind thanks to lack of triple battle, lack of post game content STILL and the wi-fi capabilities taking a step back in terms of innovation AND convenience. Not too mention the terrible frame rates even on the n3ds. The totem battles and trials were a nice added touch of challenge and Lusamine being essentially the first actual boss trainer we had in a while with the buffs she received were awesome and fit the story but I mean playing through the story it only happens once. You'd think by now Game Freak would let us relive those awesome moments by letting us battle important NPCs once a day like in previous entries.

They figured the games will still sell even without extra content or a third improved game. Huh.

After gen 4 I feel like they've been at a loss on what to introduce as gameplay innovation. Splitting physical/special was the last obvious thing they could do to the core mechanics, so they've turned to gimmicky additions. The games themselves are fine, but Triple/Rotation Battles, Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves aren't going to have the effects on the game like splitting special or adding abilities is going to do.

I guess they could add accuracy/evasion stats but I'm guessing most people would hate that. Extra move slot(s) might be interesting but they obviously have the potential to break lots of Pokemon.

They could opt to simply balance/polish the existing mechanics, but we know that won't happen because that's not the sort of thing you can stick on the back of the box or in marketing to entice most people to buy the newest version.

I do feel that too much of GameFreak's money and man power has gone into innovation when instead they could be focusing on polishing what they have.
Of course its always good to try to breath new life into an aged IP, and to try to net new customers, but if the product you're trying to hock is dull and needs tuning up no one's going to care if it comes with a new accessory/paint job or not.

Ride Pokemon was a step in the right direction. I think it might work well for GameFreak if they used the animations they put in the game to let players ride any Pokemon they wanted, added to Pokemon refresh by letting you play games like fetch with your Pokemon, and added (and kept) one or two more features that let you interact with your Pokemon in another in depth and interesting way, then they could draw in new and a firm grip on old fans.

In the end, people want more Pokemon (and by that I mean literally more Pokemon and more Pokemon centric/oriented features. They don't want gimmicks.

I have the era of games from RSE to BW2 to sate me.

Emerald, FRLG, Platinum, HGSS, BW, BW2.

Six extremely solid games that give me an entire Pokemon experience that doesn't suck, all ending in a tournament of all of the leaders and champions from along the way. Thousands of hours of replayable entertainment that immerses me in a world that I love. Not to mention the manga, spin-off games, and tons of other media.

And six great games is way more than most game series get. Maybe GF will improve as they get used to developing these 3D games, maybe they won't, but anything they do is just extra at this point. I'm ok with where we are right now.

If you're uncertain about how you feel about the current games, just ask yourself this: "What attracted me to these games in the first place?"

For me, I was attracted to it as a kid because having adventures with magical creatures seemed like a cool idea and that's what made me a huge fan of the games.

I asked myself if the games were going down hill around gen 5 (mostly because of how many people used to shit on it). So I asked myself: "Is the core game still about having an adventure with magical creatures?"

When I realised that it was it made me realise that new Pokemon games are just new places to explore. To me, the story in the games is mostly just fluff. As long as I get to catch more Pokemon and explore new a region then there's nothing stopping me from enjoying the new games.

tl;dr If you're unsure about what to think about a new game - ask yourself if your main interest of the game is still there. Once you answer that you'll have an answer
