I think the general consensus of the value ranking of the current standard legal sets is something like:
-Roaring Skies
-Ancient Origins, BREAKThrough, BREAKpoint
-Steam Siege, Primal Clash
-Fates Collide
-Evolutions

Generations is slightly above AO/BT/BP since it has some useful cards and is only available in Mythical Pokémon Collection boxes IIRC.
Double Crisis is on about the same level as AO/BT/BP since it's also kinda rare, but it's a niche mini expansion that doesn't really have any useful cards for decks in general, outside of the two stadiums.

Evolutions is the most recent set, which might make it the easiest to get, but the pack value of it is pretty abysmal since it has basically no good cards. I mean, Double Colorless Energy, a card that has been in the game for five years, is like one of the best cards in it.

If you're patient, it might be a good idea to wait for Sun & Moon to get released, which is on February 3rd. It'll be the newest set, and seems to have a bunch of neat cards, as well as Full Art Secret Rare Ultra Ball, so its value will probably be at least about the same as AO/BT/BP.

Roaring Skies is the best but is also the most expensive.

Steam Siege is a set that people are starting to warm up to and has a lot of value in it while being fairly inexpensive. It would likely be my choice. If you're willing to wait a couple weeks, S&M will be released and it will be the top currency for a bit. Expect to pay a premium for them, though.

Should I get Evolutions print DCE or Base Set DCE?
I can't find the Full Art DCE from the Base Set Expansion Pack anywhere, so I'm tempted to go toward the Evolutions, but Base Set I think is cooler because I know the card is almost 20 years old.
I also really like consistency and it bothers me that I can't get fairy/darkness/metal energy in base set, so that's also tempting to go for the Evolutions prints since they look the same. I can get a huge set with all base set energy plus 5 DCE real cheap right now as well.

Those are from Evolutions, which was just released, so they're perfectly fine and legal to use in all modern formats. I'm just saying that there are some modern cards that have the same name as old ones, but different effects, which means that the old ones aren't usable anymore despite the identical names. Base Set DCE is identical to modern era DCE in name, classification, and effect, so there shouldn't be any problems with using it.

Electrode seems to be a better way to accelerate energies and has a few more tricks up it's sleeve than the long attempts to get Magnezone out. A 2-2 line in instead of the 10 cards between the 3-2-3+candy frees up space for other things. Pic related has done very well for me.

MtG player here, decided to try this out. Overall had a good time, but have some questions (in part because I played some thrown-together things and want to know how the real deal plays like):

- I had a feeling that this game can become too much of a landslide for the person who wins. Knockout my active Pokemon and you have an active Pokemon that is already set up against my benched Pokemon that I have to build up from scratch

- How relevant are weakness and resistence overall? I get the feeling that many decks may just randomly lose from being paired to the wrong opponent

- Are stage 2 Pokemon ever worth it? I'm finding that there are plenty of basics with enough HP to rival stage 2s and powerful enough attacks that the benefit of going through the hassle of evolving things isn't enough reward

There are certainly comeback mechanics in the game. For example, N is a card that has practically always been in the format since November of 2011. It is great for swinging the game.

Weakness and resistance and pretty important to consider when choosing the right deck. Yveltal saw a lot of popularity early on in this format. Since then, people have played Gardevoir, which resists Yveltal. Just recently Vespiquen/Zebstrika did very well at a regionals. With Zebstrika one shotting Yveltal because of weakness, Yveltal obviously did not do well. You can try to vary your attackers in a deck if poor matchups really depress you. Some decks, like Gardevoir, can't do a whole lot to diversify their weaknesses. In that case you just have to hope you don't face steel.

Stage 2s are sometimes worth it. They rarely attack, however. In the black and white era, stage 2s were mainly used for energy acceleration. In XY they haven't been used for much outside of Vileplume's item lock. The exception has been Greninja, which does more damage than the vast majority of EXs.

The problem with Gumshoos GX is that it's designed to be a late game card exclusively.

Its ability provides the most utility late in the game because when either player is within striking distance of their last prize(s), that one Lysandre or that one energy or that one Float Stone could cost you the game. Knowing they have a win con in their hand would definitely influence your decision-making. But earlier in the game, when draw Scyamore and Shaymins and N are letting your opponent burn through their deck and change up their hand contents turn to turn, there's not much utility there. I think at best you could see if their hand was god-tier or not and use that as a cue to N them. But they could draw into another god-tier hand anyway.

And its GX attack does a surprising amount of damage but still falls shy of an OHKO on EX's, GX's and FFB-ed big basics. Choice Band will help a lot in the future, but if you can't even whip it out (it's hardly a surprise since you have to drop Yungoos and wait a turn) and steal a free 2 prizes UNLESS the target is low health i.e. it's late in the game. Plus after that it's basically dead as an attacker because it's normal attack isn't worth the investment so you really have to win or be on the precipice of winning to justify that GX attack.

All that considered: late-game cards aren't that great. First, you don't want a late game - you want to win as early as possible. Second, you may lack the ability to get it out by late-game; you can't seem to grab it or bench it or maybe it's just been prized the whole time. Or maybe you had to discard it early and you don't play cards to recover it.

I think the only thing that's nice about it is that is generic and splashable. But I don't think it's good enough to splash into a GX-less deck when weighed against the fact that it's a stage 1 two-prize giver with only late-game potential.

It's okay, because they took a break from it during XY (not a single XY card causes or interacts with Burn) and now for SM they've retroactively altered its mechanics.

Old: Flip a coin between turns. If tails, place two damage counters on the burned Pokémon. If heads, no damage.

New: Place two damage counters on the burned Pokémon between turns. Flip a coin between turns. If heads, the burned Pokémon is now healed from its burn. If tails, it remains burned.

It's now more consistent and reliable, since you're guaranteed to deal at least 20 damage even if it gets healed as soon as possible.

You can't get enough utility from Jagged Saber to justify building a deck out of it as long as Pokemon Center Lady and Vs Seeker are both things. To set up the deck you need four pokemon (two of which need special tools to come out without ending the turn) and reliable way of moving energy from the discard to your hand, and that's just a soft lock that can be fucked up by a single OHKO or a bad draw, and that's all the deck has going for it.

Just got back from the prerelease/league challenge. I didn't pull anything too crazy from the Sun & Moon packs, but my brother pulled the HR Lunala. They had a 3/$10 deal going on Roaring Skies, lucked out and pulled FA Winona. Went 2-2 in the prerelease tourney, not bad. 3-0-1 in League which was MUCH better than I expected, ended up 2nd overall because the other guy won more in the Sun & Moon tourney.

For my first event I'm definitely pleased with how it went, and I'm probably going to go to another prerelease this coming weekend.
