Gyms have become pointless and only serve to distract you from you main goal in most of the games which is to defeat team aqua/magma/prism/peta jesus/whateverthefuck from destroying the world.
In at least one of the games you do this before finishing the eighth gym, making the gym and subsequent elite four even more pointless.

Not that gyms are interesting anymore anyhow, much less even resemble a fitness and training center, you know, a GYM.
In order to spice them up GF has started making them so elaborate and irrelevant to the gym that they jump the shark.

There are gyms more trialish than some trials and trials that are better gyms than few actual gyms.

SM was as innovative as three legged stool.
It fell flat on what it seemed to represent. Being fresh. Being better than XY. Having semi-proper plot.

I'd like to see Mina be part of the Elite Four. It'd be out of character, but I'd prefer her to Kahili. Or they could have Kahili leave an actual impression so I remember who she is before fighting them.
I don't want anyone to be a Gym Leader. I prefer the Trials to Gyms. Maybe make it so I can't use healing items during a trial.
It'd be cool if old gym leaders showed up so I could battle them in between trials.
Hau becoming the Island Kahuna since he's not a very good rival.
I didn't like Lillie's story overtaking the protagonist's, but the only plot I can think of is Lusamine relapsing and coming back for revenge.
A World Tournament. Kukui wanted the world to recognize Aola's trainers, it would make sense if you asked you to participate to fight other famous trainers.
More Post Game content that could teach players about more complex strategies and team composition.

Lillie returns to Alola (if a few years have passed) and can be fought postgame and in the Battle Tree.
Hau takes over Hala's role in Iki Town and can also be fought postgame as a Memory Link exclusive thing.
PC of S/M is only mentioned but doesn't physically appear.
Lusamine, Guzma, Plumeria and other S/M NPCs also appear. Only who don't appear are the non-Alolan NPCs like Sina, Dexio, Cynthia and stuff.
