I had this conversation with someone the other day actually. The two things about Dragon Warrior Monsters (the one I had was the one on gameboy) that I liked more than Pokemon were the indirect battling mechanic, where for the most part you just told your guys to attack and they decided precisely how, and the breeding mechanic, where instead of A + B = either A or B, you get A + B = C. Pokemon can't really change to do anything like that anymore but god damn would that be cool.

I'm not really sure. If we're going full Isaac, then I guess the starter pokemon are playable characters. Rowlet gets a Lazarus like respawn, Popplio starts with enhanced charm tears, Litten has firemind. The UBs get alt-path final fights maybe?

If we're going full pokemon, then fights get a lot more thematically brutal, art becomes cartoonier, and evolution methods become a little... darker.
