Yeah, the country is a bad place to learn people skills. I started going to scifi conventions myself. Being surrounded by strangers I'll likely not see again is liberating and helped me learn how to work with people a little. The first year was awkward but I got my stride over time.
Anyway, me...

Fellow catfag, sweet.
Actually, I used to go to cons in the D.C. area but the locals ended up being horrifyingly bad sacks of shit to me that it helped wreck me with regards to people in the first place. I'm tempted to go back but there's basically an entire community of people I hate and vice-versa.
I suppose wherever I end up it won't be in that area, though, which would help.

Different cons have different people. If one doesn't fit you after a couple tries, try another. Also unless you made a huge idiot of yourself chances are you will be forgotten within a couple years if you don't go to the con for awhile.
I'm going to Marscon down in Williamsburg this weekend. People don't tend to be dicks there but they can be sort of reserved so you have to either float along unobtrusively or make the first move a lot of times. So far it's my favorite local con.
In general the gameroom is a good bet for interacting with people. If someone is sitting at a table alone with a game in front of them ask them if they need players. It's a good way to interact with people within a structured setting (ie: less dickery). The worst they can do is say they aren't looking for players.
I also find that older people are usually mellower than younger ones. Some old people are just happy to have someone listen to them! I had one old woman telling me stories for hours once. She was just so happy to be heard.

Interesting! Older people closer to my age at the time (mid-late 20s) wrecked the con scene for me - younger people were decent to me. Also, thankfully, I wasn't the idiot - more like a bunch of real, actual creeps doing nasty things and people trying to take advantage of me and I became a pariah for not taking their shit.
To be fair, I want to try more pure gamer and comics cons than the really big ones that seem to have a focus on anime like Otakon and Katsu, which were the ones I got taken to by the locals back before everything went dick. MAGfest was enjoyable precisely due to what you said of a different set of con-goers I clicked with better.
I'm also allowing myself the luxury of focusing on school and getting more useful real-world experience since as lonely as it is, being away from all the drama and dickishness groups of people into nerdy hobbies can collect is mellowing ME out, which I've sorely missed.

Yeah, those tend to be a lot higher strung. Unless you're basically a ninja people can and will get creepy. Comic cons can vary from what I have seen though they tend to be quiet as long as you're not a cosplayer. I haven't done MAGfest but I am considering DragonCon and RavenCon for future visits.
Me time is always a good thing to get your bearings, just don't expect college to have real world applications. I did and was sorely disappointed. I did computer programming not some fluffy coursework and feel like I wasted my time! I might try the local technical school next time. People seem to learn more actually useful things there. Also certificates are always useful.

>>31358280
The most successful person I know doesnt have a license.
Owning a car is a liability and a huge expense. Paying for petrol, registration licensing, driving licenses, insurances, yearly maintenances and everything in-between when you could bus or bike.
The only people that should have a car should be business owned and written up on business tax or if you're a mother of more than 1 kid.
Or if you're a meathead who wants to show off how you burn money to the girls (who don't like you for who you really are)
>>31358459
having a license is a skill, owning a car is a completely different subject. While usually they go hand in hand, you cannot deny that having a license is not something you add to a resume - it comes under the reliability section.
I am >>31358435 and I don't have a license, what stopped me was OTHER people putting it off in my teenage years. Of course it became MY issue once I at least hit 17/18 but I never needed a car either for my job. But I won't deny that I have missed several opportunities to work elsewhere due to the lack of a license and car. I also think it's just a handy skill and thing to have for general quality of life purposes. But it's definitely not as necessary as the other anon is making it out to be, but you have to wonder why you still haven't got it. Anyway I plan on getting that this year also.
>>31357105
It took me a long time to get a license, too, because I had the same concerns as this anon >>31358088
I encourage you to take your time.

Employers don't care if you have a license but don't have a car. The skill is moot
>>31358558
>>31358459
The license thin is basically a requirement to be hired in some places in the USA. There's a LOT more space between just houses in this country than there is between businesses in the UK.
You can easily drive across the UK within a week or so. A week of driving in the US won't get you across the country unless you drive in teams and don't stop for any reason at all.
That said you can function in the US without a license but it's difficult and usually requires the help of someone who can drive (or a ton of Amazon free shipping) for basics like Groceries and clothing.

You only need a car if you live in a suburban or rural area
I live in NYC, which has one of, if not the most robust transit systems in the city. I've never had want for a license until now because I've never really been interested in leaving the city for much of anything, and when I do want to, I have plenty friends to call on for rides.

Sadly NYC, Boston and other huge cities are the only places with decent transit systems. Places like Norfolk and Williamsburg that are bigger still don't have great systems. They run maybe once an hour with few stops and stop at 10 or 11 PM. NYC is lucky.
