mega evolution makes sense. Battle bond was a bit random but makes sense as well. Both revert back to normal forms AND dont need another pokemon to make it evolve further.

The shelder bits onto the slowpoke tail and absorbs NUTRIENTS which causes the body to grow into the different form. If it comes of it is no longer supplied with those NUTRIENTS and reverts back as it can't maintain the different form.

This is also why slowpoke tail is so tasty.

Its all about those NUTRIENTS guys.
