I agree to a degree.
I think it has a great foundation and great character designs but a lot of the time the characters are shallow. That being said, Kukui is one of the most fleshed out characters in the series. Guzma has a good base/foundation, but he needed more story time and clear/better goals. Same with Gladion.

Lillie was kind of flat with a bland character arc because she didn't become a trainer during the game. And also gave you Nebby.

Personally, I think those two things made it infinitely better. To each their own, I guess.
