I'm not sure this is the direct cause, or at least the full issue. I had his Pikachu use Electro Ball on my pokemon in the double battle in Diglett's Tunnel, and I chose Popplio so it's not like he even had access to Sparkling Aria. Seen the same thing happen to a couple streamers too.

I think his AI is just bugged in general for every double battle.
