Even if I'm making a team with a specific gimmick or ruleset, I'm not really good at planning how the different team members should support each other beyond covering type weaknesses

You have to play a lot and be familiar with all of the basics of your target tier (common Pokemon and their sets, moves and their effects, what makes an EV spread good etc).

Also, you have to accept that some Pokemon are just way too 1 dimensional to do anything creative. You usually have to think of an idea first, then find a suitable Pokemon, not the other way around as I see a lot of people doing.
