For me, S&M might have been disappointing in the long run thanks to lack of QoL and overall bad design choices, but the actual story and quality of the world is actually way better than I was expecting.
While B/W2's story was still presented in a much better way, S&M's plot is probably the most fleshed out and engaging in a pokemon game so far.

I played it, up to league.
Festival plaza is shit, plot is just 'muh emotions' with barely any substance to it, first island is unskippable cutscene hell, alolan mons have weird distributions and are far less numerous than any other gen, ride music is even greater immersion breaker than fucking mega tune from Shuffle, and that pretty big achievement, trials are great idea that got badly butchered, and there already are some gyms that feel more trialish than most of trials. Railroading is stronger and more audacious than ever. Side-quests do not come with quest log, or it was so irrelevant to gamedevs that they forgot to mention it. Also designs of the new pokemon feel more plasticy than previous ones. Which is bad.

Yeah, this guy here. Those games were fucking bad. My friend borrowed me Diamond and I couldn't even finish that shit because of how terrible it was. Thank god Platinum exists, but still, at least the other generation's first games were playable, even if completely outclassed by third version.

Not gonna lie though, Sun has probably made me angry the most out of all Pokemon games because the amount of boring cutscenes and wild Pokemon calling help is beyond annoying. This is the only Pokemon game where I just don't bother to grind levels. Not that there is really even need to because of exp. share.

As usual I'm mostly playing for endgame stuff like breeding and shiny hunting and shit, so I'm not too disappointed.

The insane number of cutscenes and the handholding (broken XP share/free items every second/hints left and right) and the gym downgrades are not too awesome though
