At this point, it's really hard to brick your 3DS, to the point where you almost have to be trying. The main reason guides and people mention it is because it's a possibility, but not at all a likely one, same way drugs have to mention their worse side effects that only happen to .0001% of people who use them.

Just read the guide all the way through before you do anything, ask questions or look up anything you don't understand, and follow the steps very carefully. You'll be fine.
