I'm not saying EV training is "hard", I said its backwards. In the vast majority of games with customization options for stats, you do so freely, with points you gain simply from progression.
Pokemon could easily implement a system like this, but refuse to let go of their arbitrary method for god knows what reason.

In Pokemon, you're customising your stats in the post game, where specific stats are much more important than in the main story. I understand not wanting to restart the EVs on all your story pokemon, and it has got a lot harder to set up than in gen 6, but EV training newly hatched pokemon is so easy. Just throw newly hatched guys in the PokePelago island.

In theory, a skilled enough player could overcome the disadvantage of having inferior tools quite consistently.

But, considering the amount of gumption you displayed by your unwillingness spend the very little amount of energy into EV training a Pokemon- the answer is yes. You need EV trained Pokemon to stand a chance.

If you want to just steamroll opponents without putting any thought or effort into the Pokemon, then restart your fucking game.
