Most of us who were here during XY(&Z)'s run just found Amour to be really cute, and the fact that Serena actually had a canon crush and really cared for Ash made us root for her to win. The XY&Z director confirmed that she basically won to the fullest extent that this never-ending show permits.

I'm not a shipper in the traditional sense of the term, where I come up with a bunch of headcanon reasons why so and so couple are perfect for each other and such and then dissect every millisecond of an episode for "hints" in mundane dialogue/interactions. That's a waste of time to me, especially in this show.

Therein lies the difference. Amour was a romance subplot (not the best-written one I've ever seen by any means, but a subplot nonetheless) that was brought to completion. Everything else involving Ash is headcanon stuff created by fans applying wishful thinking to their interpretation of ordinary character interactions. It's not complicated, or at least it shouldn't be.

This post is full of all kinds of hyperbole, but the TL;DR of it is that the producers told Yajima to have the writer throw in this huge list of legendaries into the movie. As a result, the movie kind of became an overcrowded mess. You had one half of it that really SHOULD have been what the movie focused on (Hoopa). The climactic battle just became this clusterfuck of legendaries being summoned with no rhyme or reason, and then spamming attacks at each other like robots. The other characters, including Ash's three traveling companions, became overshadowed.

It wasn't the worst Pokemon movie I've seen, but it wasn't great either.
