This isn't firsthand experience, but a friend of mine did challenge mode before and he had a decently difficult time. Difficult for Pokemon, mind you.

It's pretty nice, you get extra exp due to the NPC's having higher leveled Pokémon

All gym leaders+elite 4 have an extra Pokémon and are scaled up a bit and some movesets changed

AI is also better according to bulbapedia but I don't know how to prove that

i believe the AI just has slightly more pokemon and higher levels, they're not any smarter.

pokemon also hold items and have more viable movesets
