Easy. High jump kick requires jumping into the air, the enemy pokemon using protect uses the kinetic force to make the user crash into the ground. While your pokemon, as soon as they realize that the enemy's defense is too strong to pierce, stops firing the beam, which prevents them from being exhausted.
