The removal of secret bases is something I will never understand.

Not only does it add more customization and things to spend your money on, but it makes the world more explorable and gives more stuff to tuck away into secret corners of the map.

I hate how they removed unique gym themes in XY. It's not anywhere near a gamechanger but it gave gyms a unique flair that I liked a lot.

Only looking at the melemele dex there's gen2 (ledyba, delibird, smeargle), gen3 (wingull, makuhita, spinda, finneon), gen4 (drifloon, sableye) and gen5 (rufflet, cottonee, roggenrola). That's just off the top of my head, I missed a few and didn't name entire lines as well as cross-gen evolves.
I dislike gen1 pandering as much as you do but that argument is just fucking stupid.

The National Dex wasn't unlocked in some games until the very end. They probably wanted to pull a Ruby and Sapphire and make it impossible to catch them all until the end of the generation. Then they remembered bank was a thing and decided to dump the national dex.
